For spring break, Brit and I drove across the country and stopped at various schools. Our planned school list was:
KCUMB
KCOM
CCOM
LECOM
NYCOM
PCOM
VCOM
We ended up only going to KCOM,CCOM,LECOM,PCOM and VCOM. In case if you’re wondering why every school as a COM after two letters, Osteopathic schools usually start with where they’re located. Then they say “College of Osteopathic Medicine”. So NYCOM would be New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. Prior to the trip, I did not think LECOM is that great of a college since it’s located in Erie, PA. But after visiting the campus and talking with an admissions representative, LECOM moved to my definite list of schools that I will apply to.
We also visited another medical school called New York Medical College. I’m applying to their Masters in Public Health program in Health Policy and Management. If everything works out, I will be in New York in the fall. Kind of strange that I just visited a bunch of DO schools and at the same time, I’m applying to an MPH program. The MPH degree will give me more rounded view of health care and open up more career possibilities. During my internship at Bassett, I shadowed some doctors with MPH degrees and I felt it helped them in the clinic setting, so I think the MPH will only help me.
